Coastal Styling

Long gone are the days when Coastal style embodied beachside cliché decor and motifs.
Today it’s a design used in both Classic and Contempo homes and is identifiable by its perfectly relaxed, unassuming style, paying homage to its natural environment.

The MyChoice Design Team have created four subsets within the style to help you really tailor your perfect coastal home – Beach House, Bahamas, Modern Coastal and American Beach House.

HOW TO ACHIEVE COASTAL STYLING IN YOUR HOME
STREET ENVY

Clean and fresh colours connect to the coastal landscape. Lining boards capture the essence of the Coastal style and bring it to life perfectly. The light sandy tones of stonework create warmth and contrast.
Native landscaping will support the character of the home an allow it to be the hero.

COOKING IN THE KITCHEN

The use of soft neutrals and timbers create a crisp, fresh look and perfectly complement the coastal landscape. Benchtops should be light in tone and complement the overall space. Brushed metallics are the perfect addition for handles on Beach House and American Beach House styles. Minimal handles are a great option for the Modern Coastal kitchen.

BATHROOM BLISS

Use light timber on cabinetry to complement the benchtops and the tone of the furniture you are using in your home. Keep benchtop colours light and fresh with limited contrast. Profiled doors pay homage to the classic feel within the Coastal style. Frameless shower screens give a clean look and allow the cabinetry and tiling to be the heroes of the space.

UNDER YOUR FEET

Carpet should be light and echo the natural landscape. Use a two-tone carpet to create interest and in turn highlight both the trim and main wall colour.
Light timber is the perfect choice for a Modern Coastal style. Keep it similar in tone to the furniture for a seamless look. For the Beach House look a slightly textured timber in a wide board is the perfect option.

MY STYLE TILE

For a Modern Coastal look keep it simple with a matching large, light coloured format tile on the floor and wall. Light sandy tones echoing a natural sandstone are the perfect choice for a Bahamas look. Tile a feature wall in a bedroom or entry as a wonderful textural option. Drawing inspiration from the coastal landscape is all important, so if you have used a tile outside, use the same tile inside in a suitable finish.

LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE

Choose lights with a nautical, maritime look. Stainless or chrome finishes echo the nautical influence. Glass is a great option for coastal lighting because it reflects light and enhances the open airy feel of your home.

EYE FOR DETAIL

Glass panelled internal doors in feature areas throughout the home will let the natural light shine in. Chrome or stainless-steel accents in cabinetry and door hardware reflect a natural tone.
Timber panelling in a horizontal application and a wide panel evokes an inviting and relaxed feel. Timber panelling in a vertical application will bring a Classic feel to the Coastal look, especially perfect for the American Beach House style.
